Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser is going for a new world record when she swims competitively this October, for the first time in over 20 years. Competing at the Alice Springs Masters Games, Ms Fraser was motivated to get back in the pool after seeing her Games record broken in 2006.
“I’m confident I’ll be able to break the Games record, and possibly even the national record. The real icing on the cake would be to break the world record, but I won’t know if that will be achievable for me until I get a few more weeks into my training,” Ms Fraser said.
It’s not all about breaking records, though. Ms Fraser is concerned about recent reports indicating Australia is now the most obese country in the world. With well over half the population being deemed overweight or obese, most commonly amongst the 55+ age group, Ms Fraser wanted to embrace the opportunity to demonstrate it’s not too late.
“I’m worried that many older Australians are cutting their lives short by avoiding physical activity. Lack of exercise is a major contributor to so many health problems in older Australians. I hope that by competing again, I’ll be able to inspire some mature-aged Australians to realise that it’s not too late to start exercising, and just give it a go.
“A great event that really encourages the ‘give it a go’ attitude is the Alice Springs Masters Games, of which I’ve been Games Patron since 1986. There’s no better place to make my re-entry into the pool than in a friendly environment with thousands of competitors my age,” Ms Fraser said.
Dawn Fraser will be competing in the 50m Freestyle at the Alice Springs Masters Games. Her event will be held on Sunday 11 October 2008.

Entertainment Announced For Games
The Minister for Sport and Recreation Matthew Bonson has announced the entertainment for the concerts at this years Alice Springs Masters Games.
“The entertainment surrounding the Masters Games is a tradition of the event and is as much a part of the Games as is the sport,” Mr Bonson said.
An amazing line-up is set for the Games, with Australian singer-songwriters Russell Morris and Brian Cadd being the feature act at the Opening Ceremony, with Melbourne cover band Sexual Chocolate, and popular local acts Built For Comfort and In Tatters also performing throughout the evening.
Aussie music legend Daryl Braithwaite is the highlight performance at the Closing Ceremony.
“Mr Braithwaite has a career spanning 30 years, and I have been told that he will be performing some of his Sherbet classics… although I can’t give too much away!” Mr Bonson said.
Supporting Mr Braithwaite will be local young local band The Moxie. Capping off the evening will be local favourites Pogo Monkey, who have been performing at the Games since 1994.
At the Midweek concert this year will be Chunky Custard performing hits from the 70’s, followed by The Ego Has Landed – a Robbie Williams tribute band that is sure to get the female crowd up and dancing.

It's a Song... Revival!
Past Games competitors would all be familiar with the traditional anthem of the Alice Springs Masters Games. The Games and its competitors have really built a sense of ownership with the song over the years and for many, the song has sentimental value.
Many would agree that while the song has its history with the Games, it isn’t reflective of the changing times and updated look of the Games.
The Games team want to hear your ideas – how can we revamp the song? It’s important that the lyrics still represent the spirit and character of the Alice Springs Masters Games, as well as reflecting the Games reputation as ‘The Friendly Games’. It should still be in the style of an anthem, and it should also contain the definitive phrase that everyone knows and loves, ‘I’m a Master of my Game’.
Let us know what you think! Who knows, if we like what we see or hear, it could turn into more than just an idea! Email us at
