The 2008 Alice Springs Masters Games has received record local entries, with 1206 Alice Springs residents registering for the Games and a total of 4084 registered competitors. The number of visiting competitors has decreased from 2006, which Games Manager Judith Dixon believes may be a reflection of the impact the rising cost of living has had on interstate competitors, combined with the new dates for the 2009 Australian Masters Games.
“I think one of the reasons that the number of visitors has reduced slightly may be because the Australian Masters is being held in February 2009, and visiting competitors may have elected to attend those Games instead given they are so close to our Games this year,” said Ms Dixon.
“That, combined with the rising cost of living and fuel prices has probably caused the decrease in visiting numbers. While accommodation is always an issue, I don’t believe it was the main contributing factor as we have had available accommodation regularly updated on our website.
“I’m delighted with the record local entries and fantastic registrations for the Games’ new sports. Indoor Beach Volleyball has 14 teams registered, and there are over 50 competitors for Lawn Bowls Social.
“There have also been some significant increases in registrations for a number of smaller sports. Motorcycling, Eightball and Equestrian have all received great registration numbers, as well as Mountain Biking, Tennis, Touch and Triathlon.
“With over 4000 competitors and hundreds of volunteers these Games, there is still plenty of people to have a great week of fun, friendly competition!” said Ms Dixon.
