Golf is big in the Alice Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 April 2008
The Alice Springs Open Golf tournament was once again held over the Easter weekend.
Good Friday saw the traditional Ambrose competition, this year won by Toby Lee, Mark Stokes and Dave Rawnsley with a nett 53 ⅓. ASMG Golf coordinator Al Purdie and his team-mates Chris Whalen and Warren Doody finished 8th, while Bernie Viklund also an ASMG Golf coordinator and his team-mates Sean O’Brien and Jake Hughes finished 9th. Easter Saturday through to Easter Monday saw a 54-hole combined stroke and stableford event in 3 grades for men and 2 divisions for women.

Fine Alice Springs weather welcomed the golfers, with light to moderate winds and comfortable temperatures each day allowing some good golf to be played. Although the wind did pick up and blow some dust for the final groups on the last afternoon.
The Men’s Open was won by local Kerryn Heaver and the Women’s Open was won by local Sarah Shacklady. Kerryn’s final round 67 (5 under par) was the best of the tournament and was all the better for the gusting and swirling wind and dust that battered the final players in the afternoon groups.
Given the workload of the Match Committee for the weekend, ASMG golf coordinator and men’s vice-Captain, Bernie Viklund put in a solid performance for the weekend. Playing close to his handicap of 15 each day, he finished in the top 10 in B Grade from a field of 53.
The other golf coordinator, Al Purdie, didn’t fare quite as well. With a handicap of 7 and in a field of 56 in A Grade, his scores left him in the second half of the field.
A total of 221 players teed it up for the weekend, included 36 who played only in the Ambrose. In the Open, 145 men and 36 women teed it up this year, including 66 visitors from 23 different clubs around the country making the trip to experience golf in the outback. And a good time was had by all.
Other big events that the Alice Springs Golf Club is hosting this year include the NT Women’s Open from 1st to 4th May and the NT Australian Senior’s Order of Merit Event on 4, 5 and 6 June.
